Allan Carlson is President of The Howard Center for Family, Religion & Society in Illinois, and also currently serves as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Political Science and History at Hillsdale College in Michigan. He has written ten books and frequently appears on media outlets to support and defend the family.

According to Allan, informal estimates put the current average debt that an undergraduate student carries out of college at graduation at around $25,000. He also noted that in the last 15-20 years, tuition costs have been increasing at about 2-3 times the rate of inflation.

All of this student loan debt causes young people to put off marriage and childbirth, a fact that actually encourages cohabitation. Among couples with college debt that do get married, statistics show that such debt is often problematic for the relationship.

Other variables come into play when discussing this topic. For example, what about the concept of working through college? Do students absolutely have to have high tech devices like cell phones? How about credit cards? These and other variables are discussed as this Crosstalk looks at the college debt dilemma.
