Vic began this edition of Crosstalk by discussing House Resolution 875, known as the "Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009". This legislation was introduced in February by Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat from Connecticut. Her husband, Stanley Greenburg, is employed with Monsanto, the world's leading producer of genetically engineered seeds and herbicides.
HR-875 would allow for the creation of a Food Safety Administration that would regulate food production at all levels. Non-compliance could result in criminal prosecution, seizure of property and fines of up to 1 million dollars per offense.
Vic then introduced Randy Melchert. Randy is a young man from the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area who appeared on the program to show just how effective you can be when you make up your mind to get involved. Never having been in local politics before, he knocked on 8,000 doors as part of his first election campaign. Although he ended up losing the election, he only lost by 400 votes.
