This program is a follow-up to the January 5, 2009 Crosstalk program on "Clothing and Character", which has brought the largest e-mail response of any Crosstalk program Ingrid has hosted. On that program Ingrid read an article by today's guest, Dr. Timothy Paul Jones.

Timothy Paul Jones has authored, coauthored, or edited more than a dozen books, including Conspiracies and the Cross, Misquoting Truth, Christian History Made Easy, and the CBA bestseller The Da Vinci Codebreaker.

After fourteen years in vocational ministry, Timothy now serves as the Professor of Leadership and Church Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to receiving the Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies from Manhattan Christian College and the Master of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Timothy has earned the Doctor of Philosophy from Southern Seminary. His academic research has earned the Scholastic Recognition Award from the North American Professors of Christian Education as well as the Baker Book House Award for theological studies. Timothy, his wife Rayann, and their daughter Hannah reside in the city of St. Matthews in Louisville, Kentucky.

Today's program dealt with the lack of leadership by husbands and fathers in the home today. Years ago it was not unusual for fathers actually to be in charge of their children's training. But now, too often, the training of the children is left to the mother rather than the father, and many families simply drop off the children at the church door, hoping to outsource spiritual training.

Churches, in trying to fill the gap, may try to keep the children and young people involved by using entertainment and activities rather than true biblical training, so that even there children miss out on their most vital need.

Dr. Jones emphasized the importance of fathers being involved with their children, not just in formal training and spiritual nurturing, (which is vital), but also as role models that relate to their children in all kinds of life situations.

The modern culture fragments the family, markets to each age group and gender separately, and blurs the roles of men and women, and too often the church has fallen in line as they structure their ministries and activities.

Dr. Jones has authored a new book coming out shortly entitled Perspectives on Family Ministry, which deals with these and many related issues.
