Breaking the US Oil Dependence

Dr. Robert Zubrin is the president of Pioneer Astronautics, an aerospace engineering firm. He holds 9 U.S. patents and has appeared on CNN, C-Span, BBC, ABC, NPR and others. He is the author of a new book entitled, Energy Victory: Win the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil.

Dr. Zubrin began by warning listeners that he believes the price of gasoline will go to $5 per gallon. The reason for this is because of the oil cartel known as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries; more popularly known as O.P.E.C., an organization that controls 80% of the world's oil reserves. It's led by Saudi Arabia but also includes member nations such as Iran and Venezuela.

Dr. Zubrin stated that OPEC's goal is to drive the price of oil through the roof. He noted that since 1973, the size of the world economy doubled, the population has almost doubled, and total industrial activity more than doubled. In line with that, oil production of non-O.P.E.C. countries doubled which is what you'd expect with a growing market. The problem is, with some exceptions, O.P.E.C.'s production today is the same as it was in 1973.

In essence, O.P.E.C. is attempting to choke America into economic submission using high fuel prices and the accompanying oil profits to put together what Dr. Zubrin called, "takeover funds." He gave as an example the 900 billion dollar takeover fund of the Saudi's. The fund is designed to be used in the future so that as American companies start financially going under due to a possible fuel related recession or depression, they'll be in position to buy them out and take them over.

Dr. Zubrin proposes that America must produce more automobiles that run on ethanol and even methanol. However, he pointed out that America can't be the only nation opting for this solution. He believes in the creation of a worldwide, open-source fuel market that will make gasoline compete against alternative fuels. This way O.P.E.C. will be attacked from all sides, thereby breaking the control of their worldwide fuel monopoly.

In the meantime, Dr. Zubrin urged listeners to write their congressmen and senators and tell them to be a supporter of the flex-fuel bill
