Rising Food Prices

Host:Ingrid Schlueter
Listen:RealAudio | Windows Media | MP3 | Order Tape or CD

Ingrid Schlueter opened this edition of Crosstalk noting that Americans, including some Christians, have become so obsessed with their pets that they're getting them pedicures, massages, doggy yoga classes, gourmet foods, formal wear, and other things that many people can't afford for themselves.

What does this say about the values of Americans, especially in light of a waning worldwide food supply, most notably the wheat shortage? The surpluses that used to exist that kept many nations from starving is drying up. Prices are rising dramatically in many countries. The situation is so bad that some nations have reported food riots.

Some people are pointing fingers at government subsidies and mandates used for biofuels. Because of this, instead of corn being grown for people here in America, it's being grown for cars in order to placate the demands of the environmentalists.

Callers present their views as well, offering their thoughts on the energy problem, living within your means, government subsidies that pay farmers not to grow certain crops, and more.
