Ingrid began the program by noting that Crosstalk frequently warns listeners about the spiritual bubblegum being handed out by some radio and television preachers. Crosstalk also warns about the pseudo-intellectual emerging church teachers who are handing out spiritual poison, as well as exposing the theological liberalism that's being repackaged for a new generation
Crosstalk, however, also gives listeners good edifying material to help strengthen you in your Christian walk. It does this by making listeners aware of books and materials from the old path preachers and teachers that have gone on ahead of us.
Dr. Don Kistler is the founder of Soli Deo Gloria Publications as well as founder of Northampton Press. He's the editor of over 150 books including the two books discussed on this program. He pastored a local church for several years and as part of his teaching and preaching ministry he has spoken at conferences with individuals ranging from Dr. John MacArthur to the late Dr. D. James Kennedy.
The first book that was discussed is entitled, Heaven Taken by Storm, by Thomas Watson. Watson was a great 17th century preacher in England. He was respected not only for his doctrinal content but also because of his ease of understanding.
According to Dr. Kistler this book fights against the notion that it's easy to become a Christian. Instead, heaven must be stormed like a city. In other words, we must strive to work out our salvation as the apostle Paul tells us to, but this does not mean we work for it. Dr. Kistler carefully explains the difference.
The next author mentioned lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His name was John Colquhoun and the book that was discussed is entitled, Sermons on Important Doctrines. This book covers core, essential doctrines that include the Incarnation of Christ, Christ as His Father's Servant, Christ as our Surety, Christ as the Lord our Righteousness, Union with Christ, Justification, Sanctification, and Salvation from Sin.
As Dr. Kistler put it, "If we become like the people we spend our time with, then these are the best friends we could have." So if you want to supplement your Bible reading in a God honoring fashion, listen to this edition of Crosstalk, and find out how you can expose your heart and mind to some great old path preachers of the faith.
