Jim Schneider opened up this edition of Crosstalk by introducing Skip Mathews, the President of Integrity Online, Inc. After this he presented listeners with some startling statistics regarding pornography. Here's just a sample of what Jim presented:
Worldwide pornography revenue in 2006 was 97.06 billion dollars. Of that, approximately 13 billion was in the U.S. Every second, $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography, 28,258 Internet viewers are viewing pornography every second, and 12% of all websites are porn sites.
Integrity Online is about 10 years old. They offer services and software to help people protect their families, to help businessmen protect their businesses, and to help people protect their churches.
Concerning families, kids are so smart and technology is changing so fast that it can be difficult for parents to keep up. Skip recommends that parents communicate with their children to learn as much as they can even if that means getting on the Internet and doing their own searching. Kids can even download pornography onto cell phones and movies can be downloaded onto I-Pods, so parents must be involved.
Then there's the plight of the workplace. It's not just a moral issue but a monetary and productivity issue that could lead to lawsuits. For example, a business may be responsible for an employee that downloads pirated music. It costs money to train an employee and help them become profitable only to have them become unproductive due to this and other forms of illegal activity on the Internet.
