Dr. Joel Beeke is the President and Professor of Systematic Theology and Homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. He is currently a pastor of the Heritage Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He appeared on this edition of Crosstalk to discuss his book, Striving Against Satan--Knowing the Enemy: His Weakness, His Strategy, His Defeat.
Satan was an unfallen angel that was with God in glory. From Isaiah and Ezekiel we see that Satan wanted to usurp God's heavenly position. God cast him out of heaven for this and now his desire is to destroy the works of God.
Since the Devil can't reach Jesus he tries to reach Christ's followers in an attempt to destroy them. In particular he seeks to get at the leaders of the church because if he can do that, he can scatter the flock.
His weaknesses are two-fold. Satan knows he's a defeated foe due to Christ's atoning work on the Cross. Secondly, he seems to not always realize the strength of the child of God who works with the Word.
Defensively, Dr. Beeke goes into an explanation of the full armor of God, and then discusses how we can biblically go on the offensive as shown in Ephesians 6.
All of this is important because of the four major strategies that Dr. Beeke discusses that Satan uses to trip us up.
Learn what these strategies are and how you can defend against them. This way you can actively seek to live on the cutting edge of a holy life.
