Tom DeWeese is the president of the American Policy Center. He joined Jim Schneider to discuss the Law of the Sea Treaty.
The Law of the Sea Treaty has been around since approximately 1982. President Reagan refused to sign it. Senator Jessie Helms of North Carolina would not bring it up for ratification. It languished for many years, and now President Bush is trying to revive it.
The Law of the Sea Treaty will give the U.N. control of three-fourths of the earth, namely, all the water. What this would do is require U.N. permission to drill, mine, and fish in the oceans. When there are disuptes, they would be arbitrated by a U.N. court.
This treaty is expected to come up for a vote in the senate before Christmas.
