Kathy Lehman is the Editor of the American Policy Center Newswire and the Sledgehammer Report.
According to Kathy, to create hate crimes laws puts the government in a position to determine what a person is thinking and whether those thoughts are illegal. Nonetheless, Senator Kennedy is trying to attach a hate crimes amendment to the Defense Spending Bill.
The second quarter hour dealt with attempts to regulate the health supplements industry. Although this has been an ongoing push for decades, legislation has been passed by both the House (HR 2900) and Senate (SB 1082) to give the FDA authority over food products.
The good news is that in the Senate version of the legislation there was an amendment approved that would specifically protect dietary supplements from FDA authority. According to Kathy, that protection didn't make it into the House version, so the bill has to go into conference where the two sides must work out an agreement.
