Best of Crosstalk (First Aired July 2, 2007)

Host:Jim Schneider
Guest:Derek Hunter
Listen:RealAudio | Windows Media | MP3 | Order Tape or CD

Derek Hunter is the Federal Affairs Director for the Media Freedom Project.

The Fairness Doctrine dates back to 1949. It required that all broadcasting of issues of a controversial nature be balanced by those of an opposing viewpoint. It had its purpose back in the days when the number of radio stations were limited. With the eventual explosion of cable TV and other media outlets that became available to the general public, it outlived its usefulness and was eventually repealed in 1987.

Because of the conservative dominance among media talk shows, and the recent change of control toward the Democrats in the House and Senate, some politicians are calling for a revival of this antiquated doctrine.

Jim and Derek discuss not only the history behind the Fairness Doctrine, but also look at the ramifications for free speech should it be allowed to return as law.
