Charl Van Wyk is the author of the book,

Shooting Back: The Right and Duty of Self-Defense.

Charl Van Wyk was an average African Christian who's life received a shock on July 25th of 1993. On that day, 4 men stepped into the church worship service he attended carrying automatic assault rifles and hand grenades. Charl estimates that about 11 innocent people were murdered and 53 were injured, a toll that could have been worse had he not used his own gun to defend the congregation.

Is there biblical justification for self-defense? Charl cites biblical texts such as Luke 22 and 1 Timothy 5. This latter text in particular shows that we must provide not only food, clothing and spiritual needs for our family, but also security. In fact, Charl believes that we not only have the right to self-defense, but a biblical responsibility to it.
