Vic opened this edition of Crosstalk with news that House representative Barney Frank announced the passing of hate crimes legislation (HR 1592) by a vote of 237-180. However, senior advisers to President Bush have indicated that they would recommend that he veto this legislation when it comes across his desk.
The main theme of this Crosstalk dealt with the story of 3 German missionaries that were working in Turkey. On Wednesday, April 18, these men were preparing for a Bible study, not realizing that this would be their last one before entering the presence of the Lord.
This would be their last Bible study because 10 Islamic men, all under 20, began putting into place final arrangements for their ultimate act of faith, living out their love for Allah and hatred for those they consider infidels. Shortly after the Bible study began, they carried out their act of hatred by brutally torturing the three missionaries beyond description until they lost their lives.
Just as Jesus prayed to the Father for the forgiveness of those who sought to kill him, this story has a similar ending, an ending that is particularly proper and fitting for this, the National Day of Prayer.
