Stem Cell Research/H.R. 3

Host:Vic Eliason
Guest:Mark Harrington
Listen:RealAudio | Windows Media | MP3 | Order Tape or CD

Mark Harrington is the Director for the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, an educational foundation based in Southern California.

Vic and Mark discussed House Resolution 3 (H.R. 3). Mark described this resolution as an attempt by supporters of embryonic stem cell research to loosen the restrictions that were put forth on August 9th, 2001 by President Bush when he set up the human embryonic stem cell research registry.

It's also an attempt by the democratically controlled congress to allow the research to be done on so-called, "excess" embryos that are frozen in fertility clinics around the country.

The idea here is that since these embryos are not being claimed by their parents, they are considered "excess" and they should be accessible to researchers so that their stem cells can be utilized.

Mark believes the end to all of this is cloning to kill so that science can have a supply of body parts for those who supposedly need them.

During the program, word was received that H.R. 3 passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
