Alan Unruh is a physician and Financial Chairman for the "Vote Yes for Life" campaign in South Dakota.
Dr. Unruh and his wife, Leslee, have been involved in pro-life activities since 1984 when they started a crisis pregnancy center in the basement of their home. Later, they were able to purchase the property of a Rapid City abortion clinic and turned it into a pro-life pregnancy center. All told, they counsel about 6000 women each year about their alternatives to abortion.
Dr. Unruh says they have never seen a woman who chose life for her baby that regretted it, but they also offer help to many women who did have abortions and now are suffering the physical and emotional consequences--a service not offered by Planned Parenthood, the only abortion provider in South Dakota.
The Unruhs also started the Abstinence Clearing House, which works nationwide to encourage young people to remain sexually abstinent until marriage.
On this special Crosstalk, which aired only on our South Dakota stations, the coming vote on Referred Law 6 in South Dakota was discussed. Referred Law 6 is the law passed by the state legislature and signed by the governor that would make all abortions illegal in South Dakota except to save the life of the mother.
The advertising by those opposed to ending abortion in South Dakota has been shown to be deceptive simply by reading the law itself, which answers their charges that there is no alternative for those suffering from rape or incest. Dr. Unruh also reported on the high rate of vandalism and removal of signs urging a "yes" vote on Referred Law 6, and also the destruction of church displays of crosses representing babies killed through abortion.
Dr. Unruh also announced a special rally scheduled for Saturday, November 4, at 10am Mountain Time at Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota, which will feature Dr. James Dobson, Dr. Alan Keys, Dr. Rick Scarborough, Bill Federer, Janet Folger, and Leslee Unruh.
Callers presented their positions on the bill, and several shared stories about decisions they had made for or against aborting their own babies, and the changes in their lives since then.
