What Are We Consuming? (Cloned Animals)

Jaydee Hanson is the Program Director with the Center for Food Safety in Washington D.C.
Since the cloning of "Dolly" the sheep about a decade ago, other animals that are used for food have been cloned. Hanson says his group, along with a coalition of other group, are concerned that the Food and Drug Administration is not doing its job in looking at all the effects of this technology.
The problem is, even successful clones have health problems. Dolly is a classic example as she eventually had to be euthanized. Nonetheless, according to Hanson, any company that has a cloned animal that wants to put it on the market can do so.
Hanson's concern is that the FDA will rule that every clone is fine for consumption. Instead he feels each clone should be looked at on a case by case basis. In other words he feels that since the FDA examines every single drug before it's released, they should be consistent and do the same regarding different clones.
Ingrid also took calls from listeners to find out their level of concern regarding the offering of cloned meat for public consumption.
