Joseph D'Agostino is with the Population Research Institute.
This week, national news sources announced that the United States has topped the 300 million mark in population. Is this a problem?
According to D'Agostino, the overpopulation of the earth has been predicted since the late 18th century and the population has gone up more than six times since then. This growth has not outstripped food production and there hasn't been mass starvation. Instead the wealth of the earth keeps growing and people are living longer, healthier lives.
Even though the U.S. population has grown, our portion of the population that's young has been dropping since 1975. Even the high immigration rates aren't offsetting the low birth rate, a rate which is partially due to abortion. The result is the dramatic greying of America, a phenomenon that could mean the bankruptcy of Social Security and Medicare.
Also discussed is the birth dearth in Western Europe and China, global warming, and feminism's effect on the worldwide birth rate.
