Dr. Philip Graham Ryken is the Senior Minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is the author of the book, Art for God's Sake: A Call to Recover the Arts.
In Exodus 31, Bezalel and Oholiab are set apart for construction of the Tabernacle. There is a rich texture to the construction of the Tabernacle which is important to note because the Tabernacle was designed by God. In other words, the Israelites didn't build the Tabernacle with a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" mentality. This mindset has been all too common in the arts for many years, resulting in a church community that believes the arts are an optional extra and therefore not essential to life.
Dr. Ryken cuts through this and other false assumptions as he looks at the arts from a biblical perspective. He comments on how the arts are prophetic of the direction the culture is going, how to nurture an environment for Christians to participate in the arts, how Christians can suffer while pursuing excellence in the arts, and how the arts are representative of the character and quality of God.
