Ethan Pope is the president of Foundations for Living, and is an author who speaks on the theological and practical aspects of managing money.
The origins of Social Security date back to Franklin Roosevelt who signed the Social Security Act of 1935 as part of the well known, New Deal plan.
The problem is, there wasn't time to build up a fund for a decade or more and then issue payments. Therefore, Social Security is a pay-as-you-go system. In other words, money coming into the fund this year goes to pay benefits to recipients this year as well.
In 2005, approximately 40 million retired people relied on Social Security. It's projected that by 2050 that figure will be up to 87 million people.
Ethan deals with Social Security half-truths, the declining worker to retired worker ratio, the partial privatization of Social Security, what will happen if the government doesn't reform Social Security, the biblical response to the Social Security dilemma and more.
