Marriage Victories and ‘Gay Games’

Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, reported a series of six consecutive court decisions in favor of traditional marriage during July, in the states of New York, Georgia, Tennessee, Connecticut, Nebraska, and Washington. Efforts to reverse or stop citizen support for one-man, one-woman marriage were defeated.

Also discussed was Michael Newdow’s latest effort to remove “Under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance”, as well as his challenge of “In God We Trust” on our nation’s currency, plus other current or recent cases.

Peter LaBarbera, Executive Director of the Illinois Family Institute, discussed the recent “Gay Games” in Chicago, which did not draw the attendance that was expected, but which were co-sponsored by a number of major businesses, including Walgreen’s, Kraft, Best Buy, and Gatorade, and media support both financially and through positive, uncritical reporting, from ESPN, The Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago’s NBC Channel 5, and the New York Times. The marriage amendment on the ballot in Illinois this November was also discussed.

Julaine Appling, Executive Director of the Family Research Institute of Wisconsin, discussed the Wisconsin Marriage Amendment which will be a referendum on the state ballot this November. It recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman, and also does not allow the state to recognize or legalize relationships that look like marriage but have other names, like “civil unions” or “domestic partnerships”.
