Pastor Bob DeWaay is with Twin City Fellowship Church and author of the book, Redefining Christianity: Understanding the Purpose Driven Movement.
In Matthew 7, Jesus said, "Judge not lest ye be judged." This single verse is often used to shut down dialogue regarding things that the Bible clearly points to as sin.
The context is the Sermon on the Mount. It was taught to pull the rug out from under the self-righteous. True, we are not to judge our comparative righteouness to anyone else. Instead, we need to realize that we are all sinners; that unless we have the righteousness of Christ imputed to us by faith, we will not enter the Kingdom.
Pastor DeWaay explains that the kind of judgment we are to be engaged in is to make a correct determination based upon facts and Scripture. This means understanding what God has said, while comparing that to competing doctrines in order to know what we should accept and what we should reject.
