Brian Flynn is a former occult medium/New Ager and is the author of the book, Running Against the Wind.
When Christians contemplate God's Word or are meditating on it, the mind is still engaged and the individual is still thinking. Popular movements such as contemplative prayer, centering prayer or breath prayers are different. These are contemporary descriptions of an eastern form of taking a word or phrase, perhaps from Scripture, and saying it over and over in your mind until the phrase has no meaning. You are then brought into an altered state of consciousness where you've reached the silence of the mind, a place where you can supposedly "hear" God.
Flynn discusses why this practice cannot be defended biblically, and he also looks at the problems associated with the modern church growth movement.
