At the heart of biblical justification is the atonement and it's this substitutionary atonement that is under severe attack today. For this discussion, pastor Rick Phillips returned to Crosstalk. He is the Senior Minister at First Presbyterian Church in Coral Springs Margate, Florida.
We've had a turning away from biblical theology to what pastor Phillips refers to as a piety that says doctrine doesn't matter as long as you love Jesus. This liberal ideology has spawned theologians that attack the substitutionary atonement. This causes them to recoil from the truth concerning the wrath of God, not realizing that if God isn't a God of wrath, a God that insists on dealing with sin, then he isn't truly a God of love.
Find out why the sentimental Jesus of modern evangelicalism is leading people away from the truth of the substitutionary atonement on this edition of Crosstalk.
